How Video Games Have Changed Over Time

As you all know, there are thousands of games out there, but this blog will be focusing on some of the most popular games available and some of my personal favourites.

Growing up, one game specifically stood out to me. Minecraft. This game inspired creativity within children and connected millions of gamers worldwide. Minecraft was made as a small weekend project in May 2009 by Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson.

The game didn't get fully started until Notch quit his day job in 2010 and founded Mojang Studios with fellow programmers. Minecraft was at its peak, it was simple but opened up unlimited opportunities for all gamers. It wasn't too overwhelming with constant updates, but it had the right game engine to introduce fun into every game session.

Then came the big buyout. In 2014, Mojang was bought by Microsoft for $2.5 billion. This meant Minecraft was getting a whole new make-over. Over time (from 2014-now) it has been going from update to update. Adding more and more features to the game (just not an end update?!?!) Personally, I still play Minecraft to this day, but I do miss the old versions. The simplicity and not overwhelming features made the game what it was. I do like the new features, but boy do I miss the original ps4 console edition. It was the best.

Moving on, the next game I will be talking about is Roblox. The “million games in one” video game that excites people of all ages. Roblox was founded by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 with its original name of “DynaBlocks”. They both managed to fund this game by selling their previous educational software company (what an investment am I right?).

This video game would be the game of all games. By basing around physics while making their block platform they created a game that would spark interest worldwide. In 2008, they made a decision that would flip this game forever. They finally let players create their own games. This created one of the best creative opportunities ever. Players adored this feature.

Roblox has mainly stayed the same over time except the change of name of the virtual currency available (Tix to Robux), but the gameplay mainly stayed the same. Untilrecently, Roblox had received one of the most reports for in-game harassment via players (unfortunately mainly between older players and younger players).

This caused a massive problem for the owners. Their decision led to the game being split into 3 sections. Roblox kids (for users aged 5-8), Roblox Select (for users aged 9-15) and Roblox (for users aged 16+). This caused some controversy for the game with some streamers now boycotting the game as they believe these new rules ruin the chance of their fans being able to meet them. Personally, I like Roblox as a game; it’s not my first choice but I adore its opportunities. I've seen many friendships bond because of this game and I will always appreciate those who do that.

Overall, I have only covered a minority of games out there, but the adaptations seem to be along the same lines. Game developers always try to add new features all the time but when in reality, sometimes less is more.

Thanks for reading and game on!
