Looking in the Mirror

Everyday I look in the mirror and see,

The person I am, and the person I want to be.

The dream me, she is kind and sweet,

The person I am, well she’s less discreet.

I look in the mirror and see one girl,

She gives me a smile and twirls her curl.

Today I will be her, I say to my mirror,

But the other girl only creeps nearer.

The other girl does not smile,

You talk to her and feel like you’re on trial.

She does not think, her words full of rage,

It’s no wonder people refuse to engage.

I look in the mirror and now only see her,

That girl who likes to cause a stir.

Those around me just put up with it,

She’s not like that, they say, it’s only a split.

I look in the mirror, she’s all I can see.

That girl who hurts, she really is me.

I want so deeply to change, but I don’t know how,

I need her to go, just leave and take a bow.

I’ve thought of ways to make her leave,

To make my loved ones feel that reprieve.

I could run away, I could change my name.

But for now I just sit and give myself the blame

And so I look in the mirror and there she is,

Next to the girl with the smile and frizz.

She stares back at me, her eyes full of pride.

They will always be apart of me, my Jekyll and my Hyde.

I can never get rid of her, not truly,

She’ll always be there, even cruelly.

But to keep her quiet, it’s the best I can do.

So I walk away from my mirror and bid her adieu.
