Thursday Theatre Thoughts: Moulin Rouge!
Gabrielle Hammond
Hey theatre lot!
We are back again... it's been a while- hasn't it? But we are back baby.
I have recently come back from a 4 musical show weekend... yup 4 shows in 2 days. Was amazing but also tiring. But would recommend!
We saw Book of Mormon, Avenue Q, Hamilton & Moulin Rouge! I have never seen Moulin Rouge! so hence why I want to write this blog about my thoughts of the musical and the performance in particular.
Moulin Rouge! is currently on at the Piccadilly Theatre and has been since 2021 and I have only just gotten around to seeing it after some convincing and pleading from Caitlyn.
As soon as I got into the theatre, I felt immersed. Similar to Cabaret except the actors aren't out in the foyer but instead just on the stage. It was fun and entertaining to watch them on stage and on the bars around them. The stage pans quite a while and there's set in the theatre stalls as well. It really evokes interest while waiting for the performance to start.
The show started with a bang... you're into it straight away! Lights are all right in your face. The set is amazing, the lights astonishing and the performers are mesmerising.
I really enjoyed the iconic Lady Marmalade straight away and then into a mashup. This musical has a lot of mashups.
It is a jukebox musical so there are no original songs apart from Come What May which was also in the movie. Due to the songs high profile and everyone knowing them it can be cringe sometimes but in the best way. The characters of Satine, the Moulin Rouge's diamond and Christian, the one she loves, sing love songs to express their feelings and sometimes it can be cringe and cliché, but it is also funny and amazing all together.
I really enjoyed all the mashups, and the choreography was phenomenal as well.
I do think however due to the sheer amount of song and dance and everything being in your face it takes a little away from the actual storyline, but it wasn't much of a problem for me as these numbers were amazing to watch.
I would highly recommend watching it and giving it a go- I am so glad I did!
