“Don’t be rash” Dr Carter repeated, “Take your time Elias, you’re in a safe place, conflict is not upon you…. Breathe…”, she glanced at the clock, Elias had been under for some time, longer than any previous visit.

It had taken Dr Carter multiple sessions to get Elias to this stage, to get him comfortable enough to go under and truly delve into his deeper psyche.

She’d been through forests of goblins and orcs as though he was Frodo taking the ring to Mordor. Witnessed the cold sweats and fear of the trenches stricken by war. Ventured into wonderland with Alice and the rabbit in tow and now about to enter the mythical labyrinth of the Gods preparing to face the Minotaur!

These sessions never reached a conclusion though… always the path, the journey, the fear and the unknown… painfully close to the end but never reaching the finale, no curtain call, no final bow.

It had taken its toll on Elias, therapy in general but the hypnosis in particular. Dr Carter had to bring him round slowly, discuss the ‘dream’ try to build an understanding, develop the why so that he was comfortable to go back under on the next visit.

…

Elias had been quieter of late, Dr Carter had noticed but hadn’t pressed the point just yet. Perhaps today, she had initially thought, but Elias’s imagination this session was running wild. It was clearer, graphic, he spoke as though he was there, standing before Ares and Aphrodite themselves!

Even Dr Carter found he was able to answer questions whilst under with almost complete clarity. No pause, no searching his psyche for answers… in his mind, he was there, Mount Olympus, Mordor, Wonderland!

Such clear vision was rare, there was usually a hole, a weakness, some chink in the armour that could be exposed. Dr Carter was yet to find it.

And now she had a labyrinth to contend with, but at least it was a pattern, a journey with multiple options, various turns, decisions that would lead them both to its centre and perhaps finally some answers…

Dr Carter glanced back at the clock, ‘another 15 minutes’ she thought to herself, ‘that would put him ten minutes over the longest she’d ever held someone under hypnosis’, her thoughts were broken as Elias stirred and spoke in a voice that did not sound like his own, his body rigid, his breathing steady…

“Take your time Doctor… this one is mine…”

The hairs on the back of Dr Carters neck stood up, her palms were sweaty, her heart beating, her breathing rapid.

“Who are you?” She thought to question, furiously writing notes on her pad.
